Yellow Gear was born in 2016 in the heart of Amsterdam, the city famous for its cyclists. The brand was founded by Nicole Lenting & Annemargien Kloek. They started Yellow Gear because they believed there was a better way to create cycling apparel for women.

But who better to explain it than the founders behind the brand themselves?...

N: Hi

A: Hey! Let’s start with the history of our brand.

N: Yes! We got together a couple of years ago to discuss a few things that we had been thinking about, based on our own experiences. Why was no one making cycling clothes that we wanted to wear? Clothes that combined excellent functionality with visionary aesthetics.

A: And don’t forget the fit. It was a struggle to find a comfortable and flattering kit. A lot is geared toward men, or unisex at best.

N: It turned out that the answer to this question was Yellow Gear. We talked to hundreds of cyclists about what they actually needed on the road. They asked for a piece of cycle clothing that was simple, thoughtfully designed with a feminine fit, blending high performance with modern looks. We made exactly that.

N: We spent a lot of time searching for the right materials and cuts. And as we don’t own or operate a factory, we visited many suppliers to select partners that have the same focus on quality and share our passion and values to make a beautiful, strong and sustainable Yellow Gear product.

A: The search for the right materials and suppliers was definitely not easy. But we didn’t want to compromise on the quality of the products. At Yellow Gear, we believe that great gear should last a lifetime. That’s why everything we do is to ensure that your Yellow Gear piece has that premium quality needed to be worn year after year; quality is essential to our brand.

A: Our name takes cue from the iconic yellow jersey, that has been adorning shoulders of Tour leaders, since 1913. And yes, it’s very frustrating that the most prestigious professional cycling race in the world does not currently have a female equivalent.

N: (laughs) Working on that! We avoid pink flowers, but we are brimming with inspiration and have tons of ideas for new designs and new products.

N: We combine performance and fashion with each other. To us all cyclists are athletes, no matter what their body type is. We create stylized, technical performance cycling clothing for every female cyclist who demands the same level of performance as professional riders.

A: Being a small and young brand, we are competing against big brands with devoted customers and unlimited marketing budgets. This makes it even more special to see that women all over the world like what we do, and to feel their confidence in the quality of our products. What started in a living room in Amsterdam has become a brand worn all over the world!
